I am so excited to have the opportunity to feature Give Me Some Sugar - a wonderful Chicago boutique cake decorating studio tucked away in Roscoe Village. Last week, my friend Christina and I had the chance to visit this quaint studio for its Cocktails and Cupcakes class. This two hour class encourages you to join some friends, grab some wine and spend the evening learning basic piping and design techniques to decorate cupcakes. After visiting this boutique studio and experiencing a class taught by its Executive Chef and Owner, Alekka, we now intend to be regulars with numerous classes on our wish list to attend! Give Me Some Sugar is truly something special that has lots to offer anyone looking to learn something new.
This eclectic studio is overflowing with originality and charm. The fun atmosphere features bright pink walls adorned with unique artwork and hanging decorations made from none other than cupcake liners. The studio further features vintage furniture and unique knickknacks that make it evident its owners put tremendous work into making the studio a welcoming place that is reflective of their personalities and vision for the Company.
The studio portion includes multiple baking stations surrounded by colorful, inspiring and functional baking tools and supplies. My favorite aspect of the studio is the mint green wall which not only houses aprons and a beautiful clock but further features a wall collage of vintage bundt and cake pans in varying shapes, materials and sizes. I would love to bake a cake in any one of these!
The studio also has a charming gift shop that offers unique items in addition to baking supplies including but not limited to stationary, candles, a variety of cookbooks and much more. I was most intrigued by the collection of one-of-a-kind, vintage aprons. What a wonderful hostess gift or stocking stuffer priced at only $25 for a truly unique and beautiful item.
All this, and I have only spoken to the aesthetics of the studio!
Give Me Some Sugar offers a plethora of classes to keep you motivated and eager to return again and again to learn new techniques and skills. Classes offered include preparation and decoration of cakes, cookies, pies, bread, donuts, French macarons, cream puffs, eclairs and much more. Seasonal classes also feature holiday candy and cookies and gingerbread houses. If you have a special event coming up whether it is a bachelorette party, shower, corporate event or birthday party, Give Me Some Sugar is eager to help plan a private event for you!
As our first course, Christina and I used a Gilt City coupon (also frequently featured on Groupon) to attend the Cocktails and Cupcakes course. The two hour course offered the opportunity for each attendee to learn a variety of frosting tips and techniques and practice these skills by designing six cupcakes of varying flavors to take home and enjoy.
The course was led by Alekka whose passion for the studio was evident from her teaching techniques. Alekka has a vibrant personality and is eager to share with you her knowledge obtained from years of experience in the industry. She provides easy instructions and creates a fun and relaxed atmosphere allowing creativity to run wild. The studio fosters ongoing learning by providing all recipes and practice sheets featured in the class free of charge on its website for practice at home.
Once we learned our basic techniques including the rose and the dot in addition to other fun tricks such as how to make a heart, flower and even a bear, we were able to take advantage of the fun variety of sprinkles, frosting colors and other add ons (such as adorable edible eyes for animal cupcakes) to come up with our own creations. Look what we were also able to create by simply cutting a marshmallow diagonally, placing the sticky side in sprinkles and affixing it to a base layer of frosting (see flower cupcakes below).
Alekka also has a wonderful ability to make you feel as though your time there is truly special. She was interactive with all of the groups and was adamant on making sure she helped take photos of groups with their creations to have multiple takeaways from the event. Thanks to her, we were able to get some great pictures of us and our cupcakes prior to them being eaten by us and our husbands.
One of my favorite takeaways from this course (both a tip and a purchase) related to her promotion of the Americolor Gel Paste food coloring featured by the studio. I have had experience with both liquid and gel food coloring when it comes to cakes, cookies and frosting. Alekka helped us to understand that gel paste coloring is preferable for frosting, cakes and cookies compared to liquid food coloring (i.e. coloring used to dye easter eggs) as it is more concentrated for more vibrant color and has less water content making it more functional for mixing into many frosting and batters that have oils and other ingredients that do not mix well with water based products. Using the discount provided to attendees, I purchased multiple colors but was most excited about the Bright White Gel Paste which can turn those tinted yellowish-white frostings and batters to that clean white color I always hope for. I recommend giving these a try! These can be purchased at Give Me Some Sugar (of course), at craft stores or online (i.e. Amazon).
Based on our experience and final products, Christina and I are thrilled to move onward to our next class, Basic Cake Decorating, in the near future. Give Me Some Sugar offers gift certificates on its website which make a wonderful holiday gift or just a reason for a get together with friends. I hope you give it a try and enjoy your experience as much as we did.
Thank you, Alekka and Give Me Some Sugar for a fabulous evening and some wonderful tips and techniques!
